What is Pride Month?
Dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ communities around the world, Pride month is a commemorative event that occurs for the entire month of June. It celebrates the strides that have been already made towards equality throughout history while also highlighting the continued need for change.
It occurs in June in memory of the Stonewall riots that occurred in Greenwich Village on June 28, 1969. Police raided the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street and were met with resistance from customers, employees, and bystanders who had had enough of the continued harassment. The resulting protests transformed gay rights, and the Stonewall riots are considered to be a tipping point for the fight for equality in the USA and across the Western world.
Where is Pride Month celebrated?
Many cities around the world hold specific pride events that attract millions of participants each year. Pride month is officially celebrated in several countries, including the USA, the UK, and Australia amongst many others. For example, in the USA, the last Sunday of June was initially honored as Gay Pride Day. Then it became a month-long event, with parades, protests, workshops, and events being held throughout June. There are also several countries that do not officially recognize Pride month, but protests for LGBTQ+ rights are held during this time.
Top ways to celebrate Pride
Dust off those rainbow flags, get out your marching shoes, and celebrate love in all forms!
Pride is all about having pride in who we are, being our true selves, and living an authentic life full of love. Some of my favorite ways to honor pride month include:
#1 Fly the flag
The rainbow flag was first invented in 1978 by activist, army veteran, and artist Gilbert Baker. Since then, it has been flown high to honor pride month and to represent LGBTQ+ folks. Bake a cake with all the colors of the rainbow, wear rainbows on your clothes, and fly your flag high.
#2 Go to a parade
Colorful parades are often a mainstay of pride, and they are a great way to keep the community connected. Many cities have official pride parades that celebrate LGBT+ residents.
In many countries, pride is still very much a political event. Get educated, learn about the history of pride month, and join the fight for inclusion in your country and around the world.
#4 Throw a party
Pride has become an important event in many people’s social calendars. Whether it is attending a party, a special night at a club, going to a concert, or just being with friends and having fun, get together with the people you love.
#5 Send cards
A greeting card or a postcard can be an excellent and tangible reminder of your support and love for a person. Send Pride Month messages to your loved ones to let them know that you are thinking of them.
Sending Pride Month messages
Looking to include a meaningful message in your Pride card? Whether you want to include Pride Month quotes, celebrating pride month messages, or anything else, my guide will give you some great tips and inspiration. Writing a card for Pride is just like writing a message for any other celebration. It should be personalized to your recipient and should not rely on just overused stereotypical phrases and cliches. The message you include will also depend on who the card is for, for example:
#1 Pride Month messages for a relationship
If you want to send a pride greetings card to the one you love, you could consider writing something like:
To my other half,
As we celebrate the month of all that is proud and colorful, I wanted to let you know just how much you mean to me. You are my unicorn in a world full of horses and your smile will always make me smile.
Lots of love.
#2 To an awesome ally
If you are looking to send a Pride card to a BFF who has been an awesome ally to you or the LGBTQ+ community in general, your Pride Month message could look something like this:
My dearest friend,
Cheers for being an awesome ally and always at my side. Whether we are fighting for equality, singing at karaoke, or watching our favorite show together, you love me for me and I love you for you and that should always be a reason to celebrate. I cannot put into words just how much your support means to me!
#3 Pride Month messages for people coming out
For many LGBTQ+ people, their first pride celebration is a memorable one! If you know someone who has recently come out, let them know that you are with them for this journey with a message such as:
To my dearest friend,
Coming out is a journey and I plan to be at your side every step of the way! I am so proud of you for living your authentic self. You are so loved and you will always be enough. I hope your first official Pride Month celebrations bring you joy!
Lots of love.
#4 Messages supporting transgender folks
If you are looking to write a special message for a friend who is currently transitioning, you could consider something like:
New name, new ID- same amazing you! I can’t imagine what you are going through, but I just want you to know that I am here for you. Whenever you need a friendly ear, a shoulder to cry on or just a drinking buddy! I see you, I support you, and I stand with you.
#5 To chosen family and friends
Let your inner circle know just how fab they are this pride and write a heartfelt message such as this one:
As we enter a month where we can celebrate the fabulous diversity of humanity and all that it entails, I want to thank you. Thank you for always accepting me and helping me be my true self; thank you for embracing me into your family, and thank you for being there for me when I need you.
Lots of Love,
A time of recognition and celebration of love in all forms, celebrating Pride Month is about a wider commitment to making the world a better place for all people.
