They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and while this is true for some, it can also be very difficult to maintain communication and the feeling of closeness in a long distance relationship. Whether you live apart for work reasons, you met online and aren’t yet able to move in together or for any other reason, it can put a strain on your relationship.

Sending romantic messages to each other is a wonderful way of keeping in touch and letting your partner know that you love them and are thinking about them. Sending daily texts and calling are great ways to stay connected, but for something a little more special, take a look at this list of ideas below. Time to show them the extra effort you can put in to put a smile on their face!

Ideas for writing romantic messages for long distance relationships

It’s not always easy to think of how to start your romantic messages. Here are six unique ideas to help you find the words.

#1 Timestamps

A very sweet message idea can be written over the course of a day, like a diary. Simply write down every time you think of your partner along with a timestamp. It’s a really cute and simple way to let them know the different things that remind you of them throughout the day. It could also be sent at night as a sweet goodnight message for your love.

#2 Romantic good morning message

Sending a good morning message for your long distance love to wake up to can be a very cute thing to do as a way to help them start their day in a great mood. You can just say the usual things you would say if you were really together, or send them a kind of “wishes for the day”. This will be especially appreciated if you know that something big is planned for their day ahead, like a job interview or starting a new class.

#3 How you remind me

(Excuse the corny Nickelback title!) This idea is similar to the one above, but instead of time stamping your romantic message, it can just be a list of everything that reminds you of them. It can include anything from food to movies to walking by places you’ve visited together. It’s another romantic way of letting them know you think of them often.

#4 Miss you

This idea may seem simple, but it is romantic and is guaranteed to show how much you care about your partner. An honest message describing what you miss about them is sure to tug at their heartstrings. Be as specific as you can to add a personal touch, “I miss the way you giggle like a schoolkid watching Adam Sandler movies” is way more interesting than just “I miss the way you laugh”.

#5 Getting to be together again

Another idea for a romantic message is to write about what you want to do when you are together again. Talk about what you will do, where you will go, and be sure to involve imagery including all the senses to really build a vivid picture for them. What smells will be coming from the café? What sounds as you stroll through the park? How will the grass feel between your fingertips? Etc. Writing something involved and imaginative like this is sure to make your partner swoon and count down the days until they see you again.

#6 Past dates

Instead of focusing on the future, how about writing your memories of the past? It can be a really romantic and cute message if you write out in detail your memories of the first time you met. What were your initial thoughts upon meeting? What snippets of conversation really stood out to you? How did you feel? Nervous? Excited? Was it love at first sight?! All of these things are really sweet to reminisce about, and perhaps you haven’t told your partner in such great detail before, so it will be nice for them to see things from your perspective and maybe weigh in with their thoughts on it too, as it may be totally different from yours!

Romantic quotes to send messages of love

Still not sure you have the words? Then let the great poets, speakers and lyricists create your romantic messages for you.

“Being in a long distance relationship is like being in school all over again: Distance teaches us to appreciate the days that we get to spend together and how to define patience. It reminds us that every moment together is special, and every second together should be cherished… And just like when I was in school, I’d rather skip class and kiss you in the stairwell.”

– Lisa McKay
A romantic message / quote by Lana Del Ray about long distance love

“Distance sometimes lets you know who is worth keeping and who is worth letting go.”

– Lana Del Rey

“In true love, the smallest distance is too great, and the greatest distance can be bridged.”

– Hans Nouwens
A Charles Dickens romantic message about the joy of love

“The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again.”

– Charles Dickens

“While I sleep, I dream of you, and when I wake, I long to hold you in my arms. If anything, our time apart has only made me more certain that I want to spend my nights by your side, and my days with your heart.”

Nicholas Sparks
A Margaret Atwood romantic quote

“I exist in two places, here and where you are.” – Margaret Atwood

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

– A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
