Over the course of three days, we explore the Murtal region of Styria, Austria, and build a travel itinerary for you, that we’ve tried, tested and loved!
All about the Styria region
Nestled in the heart of Austria, Styria is a region renowned for its stunning natural beauty (think panoramic mountain ranges), rich cultural heritage, and of course, predilection for outdoor activities. With 92 (!) peaks reaching over 2000 meters, rolling hills, crystal clear lakes and green forests, this idyllic corner of Europe is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse yourself in a world of relaxation, adventure and discovery.
For cycling and mountain biking fans in particular, Murtal is a fantastic and diverse region to visit. Flat trails are perfect for an afternoon of relaxed cycling, while on the challenging MTB trails you can really get your groove on. Always along for the ride? The soothing murmur of the Mura River! The unique bike node system in the Murtal is the perfect orientation aid here and promises dozens of individual routes.
Over the course of three days, we explore the Murtal region of Styria, taking in some of its almost 100 iconic landmarks and hidden treasures. From the adrenaline-fueled excitement of the Red Bull Ring to the tranquil beauty of Winterleiten lake and mountain walk, we experience a heady glimpse of what this wonderful region has to offer.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Murtal tourism board in the Steiermark for inviting us and hosting our stay in Murtal. Your warm hospitality and expert guidance made our trip truly unforgettable. We can’t wait to come back and explore more of this beautiful region! While this trip was sponsored, all opinions expressed are fully our own.
First: Where to stay?
Let me tell you about Gasthof Perschler, the cozy family-run hotel that was our home for the duration of our two night stay. We were blown away by the warm and friendly service provided by the staff, who made us feel right at home from the very moment we arrived. (Which was in fact shortly after touchdown, thanks to a handy airport pick up service!)
The restaurant serves up delicious Styrian cuisine made with locally-sourced ingredients, and we enjoyed two memorable meals here, as well as a daily hearty breakfast buffet.
But that’s not all – Gasthof Perschler also offers a range of activities to keep you entertained during your stay. We opted for a Segway tour (for the first time ever!) through the surrounding woodland with Mr. Perschler himself, which was an absolute blast – and, surprisingly, easier than it looks. And if a Segway doesn’t sound like quite the right vehicle for you, you can also rent e-bikes, quads or Rykers from the inn and explore the region.
Fun fact: during the Formula 1 races held at the nearby Red Bull Ring a few weeks back, many racers choose to stay at Gasthof Perschler. And we can see why – with its comfortable rooms, range of activities, and fantastic view, it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind in Murtal and the surrounding Styria.
Three days in Murtal – what to do
Day one in Murtal
Following our airport pick up by the Gasthof Perschler and a hearty lunch (including one large Schnitzel, because when in Austria…), we head to the legendary Red Bull Ring. From adrenaline-fueled laps around the track to watching high-speed races, this world-renowned motorsport destination is a car enthusiast’s heaven. Check out the different tours and experiences available year around here.
An afternoon pickup finds us at the Jamila Coffee and Roastery, enjoying the only air-roasted coffee in Europe. But not without taking a behind-the-scenes tour through the roastery first!
Winding down after our early start, we head to the Aqualux thermal baths, a paradise of saunas, pools and pure relaxation. Child-free visitors will be excited to learn that this spa boasts an adult-only area which includes four saunas, two outdoor, and one indoor, swimming pools and numerous other relaxation options. We can also vouch for the tasty food, which we paired with a refreshing Thalheim grape lemonade.
Day one: Summary
- Check-in at Gasthof Perschler and enjoy a delicious lunch.
- Take a tour of the Red Bull Ring, one of the most iconic racing circuits in the world.
- Visit Jamila Coffee and Roastery for a behind-the-scenes look at (and taste of!) coffee roasting.
- Relax and unwind in the evening at the Aqualux thermal baths, including a delicious dinner.
Day two in Murtal
On our second day in Murtal, we take a local walking tour of Judenburg, where we get one of our best views of the region yet. From the top of the Star Tower in the town center, rolling hills, dense forests and the historic marketplace and town below, stretch in all directions.
Once we’ve had our fill of the market town’s history, we set off for lunch at the Winterleitenhütte, situated on a mountain climb next to a scenic alpine lake – a great place to begin a hike. A charcuterie plate featuring the region’s specialities, as well a soup in the Austrian tradition, fortifies us for a walk around the area. If you’re lucky enough to have timed your trip for July, you may get to see the vibrant pink Almrausch, a native flower which blooms for just ten days, lighting up the mountain hillsides. The Almrausch is particularly beautiful to see at the Winterleitensee, Scheibelsee or Rosenkogel.
At Edelsteine Krampl, the precious stones of the region captivate us, as we learn how they’re sculpted into the wonderful items that we do not hesitate to raid shortly after in the gift shop. One of our team swears she’ll head back soon to participate in one of the workshops offered here.
Lastly, we head to Campingpark Fisching, where e-bikes await us for a cruise around Murtal’s scenic countryside. If you, like us, have never been on an e-bike then take our word for it, you do not want to cycle through a rolling landscape like this one without one!
The evening brings a delicious dinner back at our Gasthof followed by a Lillet-Spritz with a view on our room’s comfy terrace lounger. The perfect end to the day!
Day two: Summary
- Take a guided tour of Judenburg, including a visit to the Star Tower for panoramic views of the surrounding area.
- Have lunch at Winterleitenhütte and take a leisurely walk around Winterleiten lakes, taking in the beautiful Almrausch blooms.
- Tour Edelsteine Krampl and learn about local precious stones.
- Explore the region on an e-bike tour.
- Enjoy dinner back at Gasthof Perschler.
Day three in Murtal
With time for one more activity on our final day in Murtal before we head off on the train, we get to grips with our Segways outside the Gasthof Perschler in high anticipation of the tour ahead. Once we have our Segways under control, we head out through the woodlands on an exciting course which shows us the enchanting nature surrounding our hotel at close range.
Day three: Summary
- End your trip on a high note with a mountain Segway tour through the Gasthof Perschler.
