When is Valentine’s Day?
Commemorating love with hearts and flowers, we celebrate Valentine’s Day on 14th February each year. The holiday of love is featured in the calendars of many countries around the world, including the UK, USA, Australia, Turkey, and Spain amongst many others.
When did people first start writing Valentine’s Day card quotes?
A celebration of love and all things romance, people have been marking this day for centuries, and there is some dispute as to where it originated. St. Valentine is thought to have been Roman, but there is little known about why this guy became the patron saint of love. Rumour has it he was a Christian martyr who had been arranging marriages for soldiers against the Emperor’s wishes. There has also been some suggestion that the holiday has origins in the festival of Lupercalia, a Roman festival that celebrated spring.
Made popular by Shakespeare through the play, Hamlet, from the 18th century onwards people began writing a Valentine’s Day card or more accurately, love letters, to their heart’s desire on the 14th February each year. They would often decorate these with traditional symbols of love and Valentine’s Day card quotes. One of the oldest surviving examples of a pre-printed Valentine’s Day Card dates back to 1797. But in the early 1910s, an American company, which would later become Hallmark, would begin creating official cards- and the rest is history!

5 Great Ways to Treat Your Valentine
In 2022, Brits spent £1.37 billion on Valentine’s Day. But this is nothing compared to Americans who spend a whopping $19.6 billion. Valentine’s Day is ultimately a celebration of our love for someone and for many people that means treating their loved one to something special.
But treating your partner doesn’t have to be expensive. Looking for romantic ways to treat your loved one this valentine? Some of our favorite suggestions include:
#1 Breakfast in Bed
Nothing says luxury like breakfast in bed, and this will undoubtedly put a smile on your loved one’s face. Whether it is tea and toast or you push the boat out with waffles, pancakes or a full English breakfast, your loved one will appreciate this indulgent treat.
#2 DIY your own card (using our perfect Valentine’s Day card quotes of course!)
Embrace your creativity and let your imagination run wild. Let your loved one know you care with a DIY handcrafted card; made with love.
#3 Cook dinner
If you want your Valentine to know you love them, cooking dinner is also an excellent option. Get a babysitter, light some candles, and pop something smooth on the stereo.
#4 Make some coupons
Granted, it doesn’t sounds sexy, but it actually is romantic. A popular Valentines gift for those who aren’t in the position to spend a lot this year but would still like to gift something a little sentimental. Create a book of personalized coupons that can be redeemed throughout the year, examples could include a 20-minute massage, dinner, chores, or whatever you like…
#5 Pop the Question
Yes, it is a cliché – but for good reason! If you have been dating for a while and wondering when is the right time to ask about marriage, Valentine’s Day is usually a safe yet romantic choice. If you’re not ready for that one yet, how about a grand gesture – like the puppy, or kitten he or she’s always wanted to have?
Writing Valentine’s Day Card Quotes: 6 Romantic Examples
Whilst it may seem easier just to sign your card ‘love from’, it remains that writing a personalised message on your card will add some serious sentimental value to your card. However, it can be difficult deciding what to write or which Valentine’s Day Card quotes to use. Hopefully, our messages will inspire you!
Valentine Crush
If you want a particular someone to be your valentine, why not stick to the traditional route and send them a card? You could write:
We have only known each other for a little while but I’ve already realized you are my favourite person. When I picture the future, I want you by my side. Will you be my Valentine?
Or go with the traditional:
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet,
And so are you!
New Love
Choosing what to write on a card for a new relationship can be tough, particularly if you have not said the L-word just yet. You could write:
As we celebrate Valentine’s together, I can only hope that it is the first of many with you by my side. You are the brightest part of my day, and your smile makes me smile! Be my Valentine?
Old Flame
If you have been in a relationship for a while, Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to let them know you’ve still got it! How about writing a Valentine’s Day card with a loving message full of gratitude such as this one:
Thank you for being there for me, and for always knowing how to make me smile. Thank you for showing me how good a relationship can be. Thank you for making me laugh, and for putting up with me! I’m so lucky to have the chance to grow old with you at my side. Will you be my forever Valentine?
Spousal Commitment
Just because you have been married for years, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t celebrate your lover! If you are looking for inspiration for what to write on a Valentine’s Day card for your wife or husband, this message may help:
To my forever Valentine, even after all these years, you still take my breath away. I love you more today than I did yesterday, and you can bet I will love you even more tomorrow. I am so thankful you choose to stand by my side. Adore you always, your loving husband/wife.
Platonic Love
Valentine’s Day has moved beyond sending candy and flowers to our heart‘s desire. Many of us send cards to our friends now as well. After all, it’s often their love that we cannot live without:
If true love is gold, then true friendship are diamonds. Relationships come and go, but you will always be my number one. Who needs a valentine, when I have a friend like you! Love you always.

When to send your Valentine’s Day card
It is always nice to receive your card on the day itself, although it isn’t always possible. If you are sending a real card in the post, then check to see how long the post takes in your country. If you are concerned that they will not receive it in time, it is better to post it early rather than late. We would advise around 5-10 working days before, so try to order and post your card before the 9th of the month and sooner if there’s a weekend in between!
Alternatively, design and order your card with MyPostcard and have them mail your card for you – anywhere worldwide, usually within up to 5 days or 3 in Europe.
